ABPW In The News - Event leads to November gratitude at The Rose

When Bikers Against Breast Cancer kicked off their fundraising efforts at the Second Chance Saloon in Pasadena this October, organizer Janet Slocum quietly hoped to exceed last year’s record-breaking total to gift to The Rose. She had no idea that not only would she reach that personal goal, but she would help push the nonprofit breast health organization’s October fundraising levels to new heights as well.
In November, The Rose announced a record-breaking 81 fundraisers were put on by schools, sports teams, beauty product retailers, restaurants and bars in support of The Rose. And those activities brought in more than $235,000 in what is nationally deemed “breast cancer awareness month.”
Second Chance Saloon’s day of barbecue and silent and live auctions contributed $20,000 to that total – a $5,000 increase from the inaugural event held last year.
“It’s such a great feeling when your community shows up and supports you,” said Janet, a survivor whose own breast cancer was diagnosed in 2006. “From my committee who live in LaPorte, Pasadena and Deer Park to the Beer and Ashes Cooking Team who spent two weeks in preparation to everyone who came out on the day of the event – I’m so very grateful.”
In previous Octobers, Janet had committed her time to breast cancer walks, but in recent years she longed to get closer to the action. When she and her husband Bobby took over the Second Chance Saloon in Pasadena, she knew she had a ready-made fundraising venue. She called on her friend Brahana Howard, who serves as the Centers Director at The Rose, and asked for guidance.
Brahana, a committee member of Bikers Against Breast Cancer since its launch five years ago, suggested the BABC would make a great match.
With such a successful start in 2012, Janet knew she would be back for a “second chance” at raising funds to help cover the costs of care for the uninsured at The Rose.
The long tables filled with silent auction contributions that ranged from sports memorabilia to beauty products and decorative pumpkins along with live auction packages that included a 300 pound pig were gathered and displayed by Janet and committee members Susan McCauley, Margaret Granbow, Bridget Wallace, Carmen Madison, Bev Guiterrez, Brahana Howard, Melissa Menchaca, Tricia Ford, Mechelle Dockall, Gigi Moreno, Janet Church, Shawna Tregre, Rhonda Fannin, Holly Perry, Araceli Salazar, Andrea Ghotekar, and Nancy Aguero.
The Beer and Ashes Cooking Team included Willis Corbin, James Fannin, Bruce Dockall, Jay Lyons, and Don Perry.
“Janet and her entire team are excellent representatives of the kind of community support that has ensured The Rose has been able to fulfill its mission for our nearly 30-year history,” said Dorothy Gibbons, CEO and Co-Founder of the organization. “Her vision to make each year bigger and better is inspiring and parallels our commitment to quality breast health care for every woman we serve. I am very grateful to Janet and Bobby for their continuing support of our work.”
The BABC has raised more than $250,000 in its five years of fundraising for The Rose. The volunteer committee organizes a Mothers Day Weekend ride annually. Last year nearly 700 bikes participated.
The Rose is a nonprofit breast health organization serving both insured and uninsured women in the Houston area and 25 counties through its ever expanding mobile program.

Leonditis, an almost 300 lb. pig that placed 7th in 2 recent showings, was donated by Deer Park Senior Samantha Oates for the live auction held at the Second Chance Saloon with proceeds benefitting The Rose. Sam's mom is Tonia Cloninger, a breast cancer survivor diagnosed by The Rose. Sam wanted to give back to The Rose in recognition of the help her mom received. (Processing was donated by Jackson's Deer Processing in Crosby, although, to date, new owner Ralph Hill of Pasadena has given Leonditis “pet” status.)
